Embracing All Parts of Yourself in Leadership & Life

Derek Mulhern built his early identity around achievement. Growing up as a closeted gay kid in rural Midwest America, relevance through accomplishment felt like the safest path forward. It worked until it didn't.

In this episode, Derek gets personal about the journey from external validation to genuine self-trust and what that shift has meant for both his life and his leadership. He explores why suppressing parts of who we are doesn't stay contained to our personal lives—it follows us into every room we walk into, including the workplace. And he makes a compelling case for what becomes possible when people feel safe enough to show up as their whole selves at work.

This is a conversation about curiosity over judgment, about what it costs us to perform a version of ourselves that fits, and about the quietly radical idea that the thing you were most worried about yourself might not actually be a problem at all.
